>Not everyone had access to the education you did.
Besides, the English language has been oppressing marginalized groups for centuries.
if you are on tumblr in the first place it means you are on the internet which means you have access to a whole internet full of education
there are no excuses
LOL WHAT.
That is so ignorant! I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t afford the time to sit on the internet for 8 hours a day and learn grammar and English the way I did in school.
The parts of the internet I like are the ones that taught me that the English language and its grammar are bullshit when they were conceived by white people, forced upon people of color, then denied to people of color when white, privileged, wealthy people controlled and withheld access to quality education and resources.
I will speak however I want to.
It’s my tumblr.
It’s my voice.
Why does anyone feel as though it’s appropriate to correct that?
but if you hate the english language so much why are you speaking it
and no i’m sorry there still really is no excuse, it doesn’t take eight hours a day, study for half an hour each day and you’ll be a grammar whiz within a month. use the time that you would normally spend on tumblr maybe ?????
also last time i checked learning english was a good thing, as it’s a way to communicate with the rest of the world. it may have been conceived by white people but that doesn’t mean it’s only their language anymore. it’s taught by all races and cultures across the world because it’s a way for them to get their own opinions out and heard, and bring the world together without the age old struggle of language barriers
and the only reason it’s the language of choice for that is because it’s among the most used languages. i would be perfectly happy learning cantonese or hindi if it meant i could better communicate with my neighbours or people on the internet or maybe someday people around the world in person if i travel, but fact is the most commonly known language is english!
(and before you argue that english is not the language with the most native speakers - you’re right, it’s not. but it is the most widespread, with countries all over the world speaking it, rather than only being a selective area. http://www.photius.com/rankings/languages2.html )
and i’m not correcting you! you have the right to your own opinion, as do i, and by posting it in a public place you are giving me the right to respond to it!
Dude. So then what is the point of you raising a stink if you’re going to top it off by saying you aren’t trying to tell me or anyone else how to speak.
THAT WAS THE ENTIRE POINT OF MY ORIGINAL POST.
It’s rude to correct someone for how they choose to speak in their own space. If you don’t disagree with that, why are we even talking.
But for the record, saying that English isn’t oppressive because it isn’t just a white language anymore doesn’t prove your point. It proves mine. And sorry, no, I can’t just go and become fluent in another language that I find less offensive. I don’t have the 800 dollars or whatever to blow on Rosetta’s Stone.because we’re not talking about expressing opinions here, we’re talking about using correct grammar. people are welcome to speak as they please - i don’t use capitals when typing online. this is a personal choice. it is not a lack of easily found knowledge (people mixing up there/their/they’re, for example). i feel like people who make such basic mistakes are painfully lazy, and /should/ be corrected, for their own benefit, as once you get out into the workplace if you make such mistakes no one is going to take you seriously!
also raising a stink =/= casual debate. i am not making ridiculous accusations and calling other people into the fight. i am debating a point that you made, because i disagree with it. you speak of being against oppression, but a large part of that is silencing other peoples opinions, no?
People misidentify lack of resources for being lazy all the time, and I think that’s an unfair assumption to make.
You have no way of knowing if someone doesn’t know the difference between their/they’re/there because they weren’t effectively taught, or if they actually do know but just don’t care.
I’m not silencing your opinion, but I fail to see how we disagree. You are telling me that you like to casually ignore grammar rules/capitalization when it suits you, and I’m telling you that people should have the right to do that, because the quality of their content is more relevant to me than their punctuation and word choice.
what i disagree with is your original statement, speaking only of people on tumblr and only of ones who have not received the same education. if someone really is choosing to use the wrong one then i suppose it isn’t any of my business. but no one has the excuse of lack of education if they are already on the internet. their only reason can be lack of initiative to learn.
Not everyone had access to the education you did.

I think correcting another person’s grammar on Tumblr is really bad form.
